● OTHER NAMES :-
• Army Method
• New Key Method
• Aural - oral Method
• Informant Method
• American Version of British SLT

● ORIGINATED DURING WORLD WAR -II.

● AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD IS BASED ON :-
1. The Structural view of language developed by Swiss linguists Saussure & Leonard Bloomfield.
2. The behaviorist theory of psychology developed by Skinner's idea of reinforcement.

● NELSON BROOKS COINED THE TERM 'AUDIO - LINGUALISM' IN 1964.

● OBJECTIVES OF AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD :-
1. To develop mastery over structures with accurate pronunciation and grammar.
2. To develop the ability to respond quickly and accurately in speech situations.
3. To develop knowledge of sufficient vocabulary to use with grammar patterns.

● PRINCIPLES OF AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD :-
1. Language learning is habit formation/ over-learning/ the result of conditioning.
2. Mistakes are bad, should be avoided.
3. Language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form.
4. Analogy is better foundation for language learning than analysis.

● KEY FEATURES OF AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD :-
• PRATOR & CELCE MURCIA ―
1) New material is presented in dialogue form.
2) There is dependence on mimicry, memorization of set phrases and over learning.
3) Structures are sequenced by means of Contractive Analysis and taught one at a time.
4) Structural patterns are taught using repetitive drills.
5) Little/ no grammatical explanations.
Grammar is taught by inductive analogy.
6) Vocabulary is strictly limited and learnt in context.
7) Much use of Audio visual aids.
8) Importance on pronunciation.
9) Very little use of Mother Tongue by teacher is permitted.
10) Successful responses are immediately reinforced.
11) Great to get students to produce error free utterances.

● TYPICAL TECHNIQUES OF AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD [ LARSON FREEMAN] :-
• Dialogue memorization.
• Background build up/ expansion drill.
• Repetition drill.
• Chain drill.
• Single - slot substitution drill.
• Multi - slot substitution drill.
• Transformation drill.
• Question and Answer drill.
• Use of minimal pairs.
• Complete the dialogue.
• Grammar games.

● DEMERITS OF AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD :-
• Teacher centered method.
• It makes a learner mechanized/ conditioned by the process of habit formation / over-learning/ rote memorization.
• It rejects the innate and creative ability of learner.
• Linguistic structures are not contextualized with real life situations.
• It can make a learner master of structures but it does not give guarantee of being a good communicator.
